on the back of an envelope and as usual it propelled me into activity as I like to cross things off when they are done
This is an after shot! Before you couldn't see the dresser because of the boxes, spare fridge and microwave but after a freecycle session the playroom is much clearer and so is my head. I don't mind a certain level of mess but once it gets too bad it has to be tackled.
So I felt I'd earned a little break and listened to my first pod cast.Moogsmum mentioned the Jane Brocket interview on Radio 4. It was interesting how the 'career women' in the interview seemed threatened by those of us who choose to knit, sew, bake and make things for our homes as if in some way we undermine society. I thought Jane made her points well, why should we not choose how we spend our time? The other person being interviewed seemed to imply that we are all idiots who can't discern that the life we show on blogs or read about in books like Jane's is not real. Well 'derr' as my daughter would say, of course we know that but why would I want to post pictures of my laundry pile or visit your blog to see you pedal bin or gas bill ( yes I know I've got a picture of the mess on this post too!) Having had a life as a career woman, dashing about the country attending meetings, worrying about targets and staffing issues for so many years and now enjoying my new post-redundancy life caring for my home, family and myself more than I ever had time to before I can't see why there isn't room for both. I think we are often defined, both by ourselves and others, by what we do. Why should self worth be caught up with how we spend our time? Part of what undermines our choice to spend time making a loaf or embroidering a quilt is the attitude like that in the interview which implies we betray feminism by choosing homemaking activities. I disagree, it is because of changes in society that we feel able to choose. Who wants to go back to the approach of do it all, have it all, money, money, money?
Anyway I'm going to see what other pod casts I can find, to listen to while catching up with my fav blogs.
